Sport Psychology Course Syllabus

Sport Psychology
Classroom Management Plan
Mr. Turnbull

A.  Course Overview:  Students in Sport Psychology will gain an understanding of concepts and applications of the psychology involved with sport competition.  Students will be expected to understand psychology terminology and basic concepts as they relate to sport.  Attendance is vital as classroom/Webex participation in discussion directly applies towards the final grade.

B.  Grading:  Students will be expected to maintain a minimum of 75% on all terminology exams, as terminology is vital to success.  Students will also be assessed after each unit of instruction.  Point values will be assigned for each unit.   A final paper will be assigned midway through the semester.  Homework will be given on occasion. (If below an “A” there will be regular homework)

You will be graded on a percentage basis:       90% - 100%                A
                                                                        80% - 89%                  B
                                                                        70% - 79%                  C

Make up work will be allowed for any “excused” absence and should be completed within five days.  **Most of you will be athletes.  You can always do this work on the bus.  My assignments are not difficult (although we do have two bigger assignments that will take some time).

C.   Classroom Rules and Procedures:  The rules and procedures of Sport Psychology are simple and should be adhered to at all times.

Rule 1:  You are expected to listen with your ears and eyes to the instructor.

Rule 2:  You are expected to be on time to class.

Rule 3:  You are expected to be courteous and respectful of all people in class at all times. **This includes Webex etiquette.

Consequences:
Any conduct that deviates from this will not be allowed.  Consequences for not following the rules will be:
  1. Verbal reminders
  2. Removal from area
  3. Call home
  4. Detention
  5. Office Referral
I ___________________ have read and understand the classroom management plan for Sport Psychology for the 2020/21 school year.

With the iPads, I will not be doing weekly grade checks.  You are responsible for your own grades.  If you drop below an "A", you need to see me!  There is absolutely NO reason to get less than an "A" in this class.  It's interesting, it's fun, and it's personal (at least it should be).  Why would you get any less than an "A"?  :)

Final Day MIRACLE & Evaluation

Sport Psychology
Final Day Assignment

1.     Watch the rest of “Miracle”.
2.     Movie questions;
a.     What was the resounding (clear and definite) message in this movie?
                                               i.     Use examples to prove your thought.
b.     In your life, can you think of a moment similar to the “ice arena whistle blowing exercise”?  (“Again” they run….”Again”, they run…)
c.      Is there a moment in the film that would support “Inverted U Theory”?
                                               i.     What was the moment?  How would Inverted U explain this?
d.     What was the “Motivational Climate” of the Hockey team?
                                               i.     Was it a “Mastery Climate”?  Explain your reasoning.
                                              ii.     Was it a “Competitive Climate”?  Explain.
                                            iii.     Do you remember the difference between a Mastery Climate and Competitive Climate?  Please tell me the difference.
e.     “A bruise on the leg is a hell of a long way from the heart” was a quote in the film.
                                               i.     Explain the psychology of this moment.
                  f.   How was Herb different than the average coach?  What made him unique?  Did you like his coaching style?
                  g.  "I'll be your coach, I won't be your friend" is a line in the movie after Herb chose his first round of players.  Is it important to be a "friend" to your athletes?  Do your teammates have to be "friends"?   Explain your answer.
                  h.   Motivation is different from talent. The world is full of talented people who never reached their potential. Does a motivated person have to have talent?
                  i.  "The legs feed the wolf" was a quote from Herb when the athletes were conditioning.  What did he mean by this?

3.     In your estimation, what was the driving force behind the US hockey team in this film?  Why were they able to accomplish so much from a group of high school and collegiate players when all of the other teams in the Olympics were professional players?
4.     As we discussed “Inverted U” theory, I mentioned that you MUST know the Yerkes-Dodson Law.  Please explain in detail what this is (Use a graph if needed).

Class Evaluation: (If time)
1.     List two things that you learned from this class that helped you.
a.     Please give examples so I know what you mean.
3.     From the goal setting chapter;
a.     Did goal setting help you clarify your goals?  What are they now? How did your goals turn out?
4.     From “Anxiety and the Stress Relationship”;
a.     Did Inverted U make sense?
b.     Do any of the theories help you cope with anxiety or too much arousal?
5.     Was there anything that you would have liked me to cover that I didn’t?
  .   Finally, anything you'd like to say!   Have an amazing second semester and focus in on your inner strength!
